National Mourning Day 2013

The Bangladesh Mission in Kathmandu, Nepal has observed the “National Mourning Day”, the 38th Death Anniversary of the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15th August, 2013. The Mission organized a day-long programme to commemorate the National Mourning Day with due solemnity and respect marking the martyrdom of the Father of the Nation and his family members 38 years ago.


The day’s programme began with the hoisting of the national flag at half mast at the Chancery by the Ambassador in the morning. This was followed by placing of floral wreaths in front of the portrait of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman followed by observance of one minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the departed. A ‘Doa Mahfil’ was also held in the morning at the Chancery where all present prayed for the eternal peace of Bangabandhu and the slain members of his family. The morning’s programme was attended by Ambassdor, Mission officials, staff members and the expatriate Bangladesh community living in Kathmandu.


In the evening, the Mission organized a discussion programme which was attended by the Ambassador, officials of the Mission, expatriate Bangladeshis, former Nepalese diplomats, members of the Nepalese civil society and the media. The programme began with the recitation of verses from four Holy Books and reading out of the messages of the Hon’ble President, Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Foreign Minister. This was followed by a presentation consisting of an essay highlighting the significant events of the life of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The next item on the programme was recitation of a poem dedicated to Bangabandhu penned by renowned poet Nirmalenda Goon. A short discussion session followed which was presided by the Ambassador. During the discussion, the speakers recalled the acheivments of Bangabandhu and extolled his single mineded devotion to the cause of the people of East Bengal and his uncompromising position against exploitation and dictatorship. A short documentary on the life and brutal assassination of Father of the Nation was also screened at the programme.
